10th Grade

I'm still growing...

Biology, Language Arts, & Wellness

Over the course of tenth grade, I have grown in my ability to collaborate with, and lead, a group without being too demanding and rude. We did a project known as “The Cancer PSA’s”. The Cancer PSA's were meant for us to work in large groups to create a Public Service Announcement about a specific cancer; complimentary therapies; or clinical trials. This included writing a script; filming; and editing. We started off the project using “The Cancer Letter Grid”. The Cancer Letter Grid was a different approach to completing a project.

The grid had various levels the each contained steps needed for us to understand or complete parts of the Cancer Letter. My final cancer letter includes five paragraphs: one for Language Arts, one for Biology, one for Wellness/Fitness, one for a call to action, and one for what can be done to protect against our chosen cancer. I got help throughout the project with not only writing the letter but also with doing research. Before we could start our video, we had to write a script that talked about our cancer that informed our audience in a “non-scare tactic” manner.

The Group Checklist included tasks that we, as a group, needed to get done. Also, it included when we needed to have them done by so that we could be in the best possible position moving forward throughout the project. For this checklist, we had to get things signed off by other groups as well as teachers. The last thing before we actually started our videos was doing a dry run and taking reference shots. We had to do several dry runs first in order to work out the kinks and flaws in our plan for the video. I, along with several other members of my group took pictures during the dry-runs that we did. The final video was a compilation of our script and scene choices that shows how much we worked on making the video the best it can be. We did this by getting feedback from not only our peers but also from some of our partners at Premier Health.

The future starts now...

Biology

Biology has helped me get prepared for my life as a psychotherapist. We did an independent reading project where we got to pick a book about science and had to do a mini project about it. This project consisted of reading our selected book. We then wrote a total of six reflections on the book into a discussion post for others to read and critique. These reflections comprised of a summary of the chapters we read for that particular post. I chose a book called Stiff, it was about the life of human cadavers. Because of this book, I learned a lot about cadavers and how they worked.

This project not only helped me learn about this subject, but it also gave me some extra tips I could use later on in life. In college, I will be working with a lot of textbooks, and I need to be able to make annotations about important facts. We used this tool mainly in this project as it helps with our engagement on the topic. Reading this book and posting a reflection required many steps. These steps included reading a specified amount of chapters in the book whilst annotating (adding in questions or marking the section for reference later). We then comprised all of the important facts and such into one single reflection for other’s to critique.

A psychotherapist is a person who treats mental disorders by psychological rather than medical means. I will need to learn skills like detecting signs of disorders, triggers, and things that will help a patient recover. I will have to use my discovered studying skills to keep everything in order for both me and my patients. This career isn’t just about how to treat patients, but it’s about the organization and study of such patients in order to understand what kind of help they need. Analyzing these books and understanding them has given me great insight on what my chosen career will be like.
